Better Healthcare And Life-Empowerment Opportunities For All Children Within The Good Shepherd Orphanage Home

Background

Located at Abango quarter, Mankon Bamenda in Mezam Division of the North West region, Cameroon, the Good Shepherd orphanage home or centre was founded in 2002 by the late Catholic sister Mankaah Jane, currently cares for approximately 150 children between the ages of 5 and 19. Notably, the on-going crisis in the North West Region has severely impacted support initiatives for the centre.

As a means of sustenance and auto-empowerment, the centre also plays host to a basic nursery and secondary teaching environment, and a limited poultry and piggery initiative. However, the orphanage remains under-resourced and is facing critical challenges in accommodation, feeding, healthcare, education, and other sustainable assistance means.

In 2025, our centre is trained 69 kids in the nursery and primary, 03 in vocational workshop programs, 05 in other private schools, and 03 in the university.

In 2024, we kept and raised 70 piglets and 750 chicks to maturity, and for subsistence.

Our Current Pertinent Challenges include:

1)  With respect to accommodation, we are facing issues of:

• Poor maintenance of both boys and girls dormitory, including inadequate spacing, old furniture and wearing out beds and beddings.
• Poor sanitation including lack of proper hygienic equipment.

2)  With respect to nutrition, we are facing issues regarding:

• High and ever increasing cost of basic food items, thereby, an increasing shortage of food supplies with a mounting need for our limited resources.
• Limited specific food types for children with special needs.
• Limited qualitative food type supplies or reduced donations received from the few men and women of goodwill who usually support the centre

3)  With respect to Education, we are facing issues of:

• Dilapitated classrooms, limited study materials including exercise and text books, and digital gadgets such as computers, and other e-learning opportunity materials.
• For the children that are attending outside private schools and the university, school fees, and daily transportation to school is a major challenge.
• For the children desiring to be self-employed, we lack proper vocational training facilities in our centre to assist them reach their dreams.

4)  With respect to Health, we are facing several issues:

• We provide in-house paid healthcare services for trained nurses that periodically attend to our children to minor health related challenges; however, we are unable to employ permanent healthcare personnel for the centre.
• The ever increasing cost of healthcare services at nearby clinics and hospitals are a serious challenge for us.
• We also aspire to have modern healthcare equipment and first aid in the centre but lack the resources to achieve such.

To rehabilitate, empower and provide equal life-chance hope and opportunities for the children in Good Shepherd Home and beyond

 Objective 1: Revamp the accommodation dispositions of our centre, including hygienic equipment, furniture and structural maintenance.

Objective 2:  Increase life-quality of our children through adequate and rich nutritional intakes.

Objective 3:  Better the educational standards and learning quality output of our children.

Objective 4:  Establish and promote preventive healthcare opportunities for our children and secure further healthcare resources for emergency situations.

Objective 5: Promote sustainable subsistence activities within the orphanage.

Support Seeking Description

We are seeking your support under one or more of the objectives indicated above. We have restructured plans to cover our yearly running costs and depending on the availability of resources or your generous donations, we shall be able to execute the plans.

Because this is our official online donation reception platform, we are mentioning our centre’s needs in totality and will update from time to time as further needs arise.

In Good Shepherd, through CHUDATS guidelines, we are dedicated to be accountable and focus donation expenses on the needs we publish for your assistance. In perspective, perceived donations shall be used based on your individual support choices as guided by above mentioned pertinent challenges and objectives to address the challenges. Please do well to indicate in the comment section or donation description form, your donation objective and quantifiable perks, for example, if preference is a bucket worth 15HC, donating 45HC for buckets should indicate {objective 1 and 3 buckets}. If targeting 2 or more objectives, comments should indicate all your targets for example {Objective 1 and XX items, Objective 3 and XX items) where XX represent the number of items calculated in the HC amount donated.

Meanwhile a total donation of 30,000HC will be able to afford a single item for all mentioned categories, we have instituted a goal of 300,000HC such that we may be able to cover at least 10 of all categorical needs.  

Our Donation Perks

All amounts are welcomed, however, you should be able to qualify and quantify exactly what your donated amounts will do for the Good Shepherd Orphanage.

For Objective 1:

• 15HC donation can genuinely provide a simple laundry bucket; while 25HC will obtain a monthly usable quantity of detergents and bathing soap for a child in the orphanage.
• 20HC donation can smoothly provide feeding items such as a plate, spoon, fork, table knife, and cup for a child within the orphanage.  
• 100HC donation will lovely provide a single set of bed sheets; while 350HC will get a new mattress, pillow and a bed sheet set, for a child or bed in the orphanage.
• 900HC donation will gracefully obtain a bunk bed; while 2200HC will build a cupboard and a bunk bed within a dormitory room in the orphanage.
• 5000HC donation will honourably repaint and renew some dilapidating sections of the orphanage’s boys’ and girls’ dormitories.     

For Objective 2:

• 10HC donation can genuinely provide a simple complete meal; while 30HC can provide a full day’s meal and drinking water for a child in the orphanage.
• 350HC donation can happily obtain a 50kg bag of rice; while 400HC can additionally provide 40 litres of cooking oil. 
• 500HC donation can gracefully supply other daily nutritive food items that include protein source, vegetables, and fruits for the orphanage.

For Objective 3:

• 1HC donation can get a pen; while 15HC will additional obtain an exercise book, a pencil, an eraser, a bold maker, a chalk and a cardboard paper for a child in the orphanage.
• 50HC donation can excitingly obtain an average text book; while an estimative 500HC will provide all the yearly textbooks for a child within the orphanage.
• 1000HC donation can gladly pay for private schooling fees; while an additional 500HC can support the transportation costs for a child from the orphanage who is attending a private high school.
• An estimated 4000HC donation should successfully support the yearly vocational training cost for an apprentice from the orphanage.
• An estimated 10000HC donation should gracefully support all the yearly schooling cost of a university student from the orphanage.

In order to support the education structure within our orphanage:     

• 450HC donation can elegantly provide a classroom bench for the orphanage.
• 500HC donation can remarkably provide a whiteboard and flip charts for the orphanage. 
• 2500HC donation can strikingly provide a computer for promoting digital learning and data management for the orphanage.
• 3500HC donation can amazingly provide an overhead projector for promoting group video learning and presentations in the orphanage.
• 4500HC donation can encouragingly pay the monthly stipends of seven teachers currently engaged in the orphanage’s school.

For Objective 4: While we hope to build an in-campus healthcare centre within the orphanage, currently, the following donation perks will be of great assistance to us:

• 20HC donation will lovingly provide a sanitary pad and improve the menstrual hygiene for an adolescent girl within the orphanage. 
• 500HC donation can reliably provide a simple first-aid tool kit and its one month monthly supply needs.
• 3000HC donation can unfailingly establish an emergency monthly healthcare fund or reserved resources for attending to the children’s unforeseen health complications and illnesses.

Other Concerns (Objective 5):

In order to ensure subsistence, we are involved in animal farming by keeping and growing fowls and pigs. Encouraging us in this domain will support our objective 2 in promoting good nutrition for our children. Here:

• 10HC donation can provide a chick, while 270HC will feed the chick to maturity for consumption.
• 500HC donation can generously build a mini-poultry cage or add poultry rooms for the orphanage’s poultry farm.
• 150HC donation can provide a piglet, while 3500HC will feed the piglet to maturity for consumption.
• 650HC donation can build or add a single cage or room for the orphanage’s piggery.
